The Hackney Kitchen
Our client’s wonderfully spacious open plan room leading out into the garden, lent itself to designing for her a kitchen she could cook, entertain and live in. As the room is full of light, Charlie designed a dark stained oak kitchen with accents of copper and aged brass… notably in the beautiful aged Verdigris copper panels surrounding the fridge/freezer and the oven, and the aged brass handles on the island cupboards. The sink too, provides a pop of brass. To add a contemporary touch to the design, the rest of the cupboards are without handles with a liquid metal aged brass strip on the rail behind the door to echo the aged brass motif.
To add interest to the design, Charlie has used our “choppy water “ design carved out of sold oak to the end panel of the island and on the cabinetry by the dining table, which combines a wine cooler and a wine rack for drinks and fluted glass cupboard for storage. A large larder cupboard is placed strategically for heavy bags as you come into the kitchen, incorporating racks for spices and drawers below . Finally open shelves behind the sink allow for lighting and incorporate some of our client’s personal accessories, making this very much her own kitchen, as you would expect from one of Charlie’s bespoke designs!
When we began to plan our new kitchen there were a few things we knew we wanted – something with a modern twist, yet still traditional and timeless (to suit its location in the modern extension of our Victorian house) and something which played with materials and textures (something we’d tried to do with furnishings in other rooms in our house). We knew Ledbury Studio was perfect (and utterly unique) when we saw pictures of the Chelsea Flower Show kitchen on Pinterest.
The room Charlie has created for us is stunning. The copper cupboard fronts are like oil paintings and take on different tones at different times or day or year, although my personal favourite feature is probably the fluted glass drinks cabinet, which has an almost art deco elegance to it when illuminated. As well as looking beautiful, the kitchen is a joy to use, it somehow seems to make cooking quicker and easier than it ever was before! We love the room more and more each day!
