The Stroud Kitchen
Winner of the British Design & Manufacturing Award 2022, DesigneratiOur clients decided on a kitchen from Ledbury Studio as soon as they had exchanged on their beautiful 16th century house in the Cotswolds. They wanted a kitchen which would be in sympathy with the age of the house, but which also had a contemporary look… and once Charlie suggested a mixture of patinated copper and dark stained oak, they knew that was the perfect solution.

The original kitchen space had a small scullery attached which was knocked down to incorporate it into one large open plan space, perfect for cooking eating and entertaining. However the challenge in this kitchen was to make the space work as a whole, given that there were no straight walls and many period features which had to work sympathetically with the kitchen furniture. The island was therefore designed as the main working area, with the oven housing, fridge and sink areas designed to look like large freestanding pieces. A cupboard with aged brass shelving above was designed to house the meters and a beautiful aged brass and oak screen was designed to sit beside the stairs to the utility room.
The ” choppy wood” carving on the back of the island cupboards adds texture to the scheme and resonates with the dark unevenness of the wooden beams in the room. The oven housing is designed to be a decorative display piece as it sits near the dining table, whilst still retaining practicality with storage space for pans below and the immediate proximity to the island . Like wise the fridge and freezer are housed in beautiful patinated copper, with a large breakfast cupboard and larder for food and groceries storage. Adding contrast to the dark furniture, the sink area is in white painted oak, with aged brass handles and worktops in practical ambra quartz tie the entire scheme together. To add an extra touch of glamour the sides of the island are in verdisgris copper, and the worktop is edged in a beautiful aged brass surround. Altogether the effect of the kitchen is to look like it has always been there , but with a wow factor that is definitely up to the minute!
