The Oxford Kitchen
Our client’s brief to Ledbury Studio was that she wanted a practical space for entertaining and cooking, but did not want it to look masculine or clinical. As she wanted a La Cornue range cooker, Charlie suggested a brushed stainless steel finish to the cabinets with aged and patinated brass accents to match the range and deliver a more warm and feminine look .The finishes on the cabinets were handmatched to the range cooker to ensure a perfect match, one of the advantages of having a totally bespoke kitchen.
The island is an important focal point of the kitchen, with space for six stools for casual dining and entertaining. The back of the island is clad in a solid sheet of brass which has been distressed by hand, aged and patinated to create this distinctive effect. The brass accent is repeated in the frames around the stainless steel end panels and the specially cast brass handles. To break up the large expanse of worktop and create a serving area, Charlie designed an inset of English walnut to run through the middle of the beautiful Carrara marble which has also been edged in patinated brass.
On one side of the kitchen glazed and fluted wall cupboards in liquid metal provide storage space for crockery and are framed in brushed stainless steel to match the base cupboards.
A more formal dining area was part of the brief, so Charlie designed a banquette seating area, with a round table made from bookmatched walnut.
Either side of the French doors to the garden, stand two matching cupboards made from our signature choppy water carved oak, with brass frames. One acts as a cocktail cupboard with pocket doors and a decorative mirrored back, and the other as a larder cupboard with drawers below.
Finally the finishing touch is the enormous double sink made from Carrara marble and inset into the worktop. Our client is delighted with her kitchen, which is glamorous but practical. The proof of the pudding was that one week after installation she held a party in her kitchen and cooked for 50 people with ease!
